The Relaxing Power of Paint by Numbers

Researchers of the of the American Art Therapy Association found that 45 minutes of creative activity significantly lessens stress in the body.

Next time you feel stressed about something, you might want to take some time off for an art-making session.

I'm not an artist!, you might say, while remembering your last game of Pictionary where your team members couldn't understand if you were drawing a horse or a car. Hopefully, your skills do not matter at all. Science says so.

More specifically, Girija Kaimal, assistant professor of creative arts therapies at Drexel University, says so. Kaimal recently led a study examining the effects of making art on stress-related hormones in your body.

The results, published in Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, titled “Reduction of Cortisol Levels and Participants’ Responses Following Art Making,” found that 45 minutes of creative activity significantly lessens stress in the body, regardless of artistic experience or talent.

This study supports the use of art as a therapy to heal wounds of the mind or spirit. Art therapists are employed with increasing frequency at hospitals, nursing homes, in schools, and in treatment programs for a wide swatch of ailments.

The good news is that the rejuvenating and stress-busting results of such a practice are something we can all benefit from.

For those who -like me- have neither drawing skills nor an artistic mindset, solutions exists to enable us to make real pieces of art. Along with Mandalas, Paint by Numbers have been on the rise these last years and their final results are stunning! Don't believe me? Just take a look at the pictures under and see for yourself!

"I am clinically diagnosed with Major depression disorder and PTSD on a pretty intense level. Your paintings help calm my nerves and gives me something to chance my focus or distract me. I've done the pirate ship, the very colorful lions head and going to be starting the ocean wave here soon. "
